We'd love to exchange to Berlin in summer 2025, as we haven't been in years (never together) and we think there'll be something to please us all there. But we're open to other suggestions too.

Riverside house in historic York, Great Britain

Our home originally dates from the 1930s, but was extended a few years ago. It is bright and modern with plenty of living space and bi-fold doors into the sunny garden. Our living area is open plan kitchen/dining/living with an additional separate lounge which gives us lots of space. Upstairs, we have four bedrooms, one with a small en-suite shower room, and a family bathroom. We are just a 15-20 minute walk (about 1.5km) from the historic centre of York, which is reached along quiet riverside foot or cycle paths. Right next to the house is a park with an excellent children's play area, a skate park, tennis courts and a cafe. We have a lovely view onto open green space around a foot and cycle bridge over the river. Although we are so close to the city centre, we almost feel like we are in the countryside!

Our house is a 15-20 minute walk from York train station. York is 2 hours by rail from London and 2.5 hours from Edinburgh. We love to travel by train rather than plane to our holiday destinations whenever we can.

Our Neighbourhood

We live in a really lovely area of York. There's lots of green space around us, but we are also very close to the city centre. We don't own a car but we have plenty of bikes that we are happy for you to use. York is mostly very flat and easy to cycle around.
We have some good local shops just a few minutes walk away - a good butcher, fruit and veg shops, delicatessens, cafes and small supermarkets. This local high street was recently voted the best high street in Britain!
There's lots to see and do in York. If you love history, it's the place for you. There's several museums, the beautiful Minster, the medieval city walls, lovely shops and cafes as well as gentle walks next to the river.
Here's a recently made short film that show's how beautiful York is: http://youtu.be/t8M6N4dCJjM
Further afield, you can reach the Yorkshire coast by train or car within an hour or so.  There are also two National Parks - the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors about an hour away by car. Have a look at http://www.yorkshire.com/destinations/yorkshire-dales, http://www.yorkshire.com/destinations/north-york-moors and http://www.yorkshire.com/destinations/yorkshire-coast
York is very well connected by rail to London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Newcastle, so it's easy to travel near or far.
There are many things to see and do in Yorkshire, from heritage sites, museums and medieval abbeys to enjoying fish and chips and stunning scenery.

About Our Family

We are Nick and Rachel and our sons are Ollie, age 20 and Alex, age 18. The boys will probably travel with us in summer 2025. Nick works in marketing research, Rachel teaches English as a foreign language. Ollie is at university, studying politics, and Alex is completing his A levels. We love living close to the centre of York where everything can be reached on foot - we don't own a car, as most of the time we simply don't need one, but we have bikes for the whole family. We enjoy visiting many of the attractions of York ourselves - the Minster, the city walls, the Jorvik viking museum, the Castle museum, Cliffords Tower, the Museum gardens and Minster gardens - the list goes on and on.
We enjoy board games, the boys have an Xbox and a Wii and we have all sorts of balls and sports equipment for lively children to play with outside.
We also have a cat, called Fudge, who is timid but friendly. She will stay at home during our holidays so will need to be looked after, although she will probably hide from you a lot of the time!

Lifestyle

We enjoy the good things in life, good food, good wine, good times on holidays. Nick has a slight obsession with visiting castles! We love home exchanges as a way to discover new places. We try to live an environmentally friendly lifestyle as much as possible and we particularly like to choose train travel and public transport over planes and car rental whenever we can.
