Cosy home in charming old village Gasselte. Near Groningen.

Come and experience the beauty of the Dutch countryside in the province of Drenthe. Our village Gasselte is located in two areas of outstanding natural and cultural beauty: UNESCO Global Geopark De Hondsrug, and National Park Drentsche Aa.

We are a family with two boys aged 13 and 16, two rabbits and two cats. And we love the intervac concept! We answer all invitations, don't hesitate to send us a message.

Our home is a small but cosy detached house with 3 bedrooms, built in 1930, with a big garden (1700 m2). As we bought it in 2019 in a very bad state, we are working hard on the renovation of the house and garden. It's not perfect yet, but we are getting there!
Lay-out of the house:
Downstairs:
- livingroom with home cinema
- separate kitchen/diner
- small bathroom with shower, toilet and sink
- bedroom/study (bed 1.40 x 2.00)
- Hallway with Siebren's atelier under the stairs
Upstairs:
- master bedroom (bed 1.60 x 2.00)
- boys' room with two large box beds (beds 1.20 x 2.00) and sofabed (1.20 x 1.90)
- bathroom with sink and toilet

In the attic of the large garage, our boys have their own play room, filled with LEGO. There are also two spare beds located there. The garden offers several places to sit and has a lot of shade in summer. Nature trail De Hamerlanden starts just at the other side of the road.

There is a trampoline, soccer goal, fruit and vegetables in the garden and of course we have lots of toys for children and board games for grown ups. Lots of reading material (also in English and some in German), DVD's and xbox/playstation games.

Please note: small children are welcome, but our house is not toddler proof. Our garden is not entirely enclosed by a fence, they can walk on to the road from the driveway. We don't have fences at the top/bottom of the stairs.

About the neighborhood

We live in the outer rim of the beautiful small village Gasselte in the Northern part of the Netherlands, situated in the Hondsrug, the only UNESCO Global Geopark of the Netherlands. The village is typical for the region with its old farms with thatched roofs. The village is surrounded by forests and fields of heather, bogs and marshes filled with ancient hunebedden (neolithic monuments) and burial mounts, all within a few minutes reach from our home. It´s a cyclist's and walker´s paradise, with a lot of cycling and walking tracks, starting right on our doorstep.
There are several clean lakes with sandy beaches in the surrounding forrests to go swimming (Zandgat Kostvlies, Gasselterveld, Loomeer, Ieberenplas, Ellertshaar) and two open air swimming pools (Gieten and Exloo). In Borger or Assen you can find indoor swimming pools.

In Gasselte, you can find several bistro's and restaurants, a bakery, post office, gasoline station/garage, riding school and golf course. For the daily groceries and more shops, you can go either to Gieten (3km) or Borger (6km). It has good public transport connections with express busses to Assen, Emmen, Stadskanaal, Veendam and Groningen.

The vibrant city of Groningen, home of the 400 years old University of Groningen, cultural capital of Northern Netherlands, was voted #1 event city of The Netherlands. This old Hanseatic city is only 30 minutes by car or public transport. Giethoorn, our own green Venice, is located in the largest continuous fenland of Northern Europe, and is an hours drive away. An hour to the north brings you to Lauwersoog, gateway to the Wadden Sea, with the ferry to the beautiful Wadden Isle Schiermonnikoog. And since we live in a small country, Amsterdam is just two hours away by car or by train (from Assen).
But why go to Amsterdam when, according to CNN, Groningen is the place to be? 'Young and hip, Groningen is a winning alternative to Amsterdam. The canals and classic Dutch buildings are all in evidence, but without the bustling hordes of tourists'.

Lovely family that gave us a warm welcome. The house was great. It was comfortable and the location was perfect. So many things to see and do. The nearby lake for swimming is a big bonus. We would not mind doing another exchange.

Creative Dutch family

Hi!
We're Reinier (49, art school alumnus, bus driver, renovating our home), Charissa (50, historian turned communications officer), Arend (sporty 16 year old boy) and Siebren (creative 13 year old boy) Caron. And  we'de love to exchange homes with you!

We love being outdoors, that's why we moved from The Hague/Amsterdam to the countryside. Our two very energetic boys now have plenty of space to run around.

Ofcourse we have lots of toys, especially cars, trains, LEGO, bikes and other wheeled vehicles for your children to play with. As we are board game geeks, also looooots of board games (quite a lot in English or German).

We have two little old she-cats who are rather shy, but the red one will come to you if you are patient. We adopted them from the pet rescue in 2024. Outside, we have two little rabbits, Speedy and Walter. We hope you will take care of them. We will of course care for your pets, but you can not take your pet to our house.
